You’ve booked your session, the date’s on the calendar, and now the big question hits: “What should we wear?!”
First of all—take a breath. You don’t have to look like you walked out of a catalog. In fact, I want you to look like you. The most important thing is that you feel confident, comfortable, and connected to the story we’re capturing.
Here are a few tips to help you pick outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like your own:
1. Start with the vibe you’re going for
Do you want your photos to feel soft and romantic? Bold and modern? Earthy and natural? Think about your location and the story we’re telling, and choose pieces that support that feel. Flowing dresses, cozy knits, worn-in denim, linen textures—these can all help create the vibe you want.
2. Neutrals, muted tones, and earthy colors work like magic
Colors that blend with nature—think cream, rust, olive, slate blue, dusty rose—tend to photograph best. Avoid bright neons or super bold patterns that might pull attention away from your faces and emotions. You want the focus to be on connection, not clothing.
3. Coordinate without matching
Gone are the days of everyone wearing jeans and white shirts. Instead, choose a color palette (like warm neutrals or cool tones) and build everyone’s outfits around that. Mix in different textures (denim, cotton, lace) and patterns (like florals or subtle stripes) to add visual interest.
4. Dress for movement
The way fabric flows in the wind or catches the light can add so much to a photo. Long dresses, oversized cardigans, and layered pieces can bring your photos to life. And trust me—twirling toddlers or a dramatic dress sweep always make for beautiful moments.
5. Comfort = confidence
If something feels itchy, too tight, or like you’re constantly adjusting it… skip it. You should be able to walk, cuddle, chase your kiddos, or dance with your partner without worrying about your clothes. Comfort photographs better than perfection ever could.
6. Don’t forget the details
Barefoot or boots? Statement earrings or a felt hat? These little touches help tell your story and bring personality to your photos. Just keep it cohesive with your overall look.
When in doubt, send me a few outfit ideas—I love helping clients style their sessions. We’re not just taking pictures; we’re preserving a season of your life, and I want it to feel as real, soft, and wild as the love you share.
